Journal Club- Authentic Assessment

CHMLS Education Hub are running a regular journal club that's open to all staff at the university, where staff can read and discuss pedagogical articles on teaching and learning.

Nick Worsfold and David Tree will lead a discussion on Authentic Assessment through the lens of this paper (Full article: Authentic assessment: creating a blueprint for course design (tandfonline.com)

Some questions for discussion:

  • What do you think of the three ‘conceptual dimensions’ that emerged from the review?
  • What does 'good practice' in authentic assessment look like at both module and programme level in your discipline?
  • Does this differ between vocational and non-vocational programmes? Should it?
  • Should we make assessments more authentic even if students find them hard and get lower grades?
  • How does the intention to make assessment more authentic fit with the drive to reduce the number of assessments across many programmes and how does formative assessment fit within this framework.
  • What does authentic feedback look like in your discipline and should we try to make feedback more authentic? How?

Bring your lunch or a coffee!
