Open Book Exams: Opportunities and Challenges
The move to remote, open book exams was necessary in order to continue assessments during the Covid-19 lock-down in Spring 2020. But there are some who think that open book exams cannot be as valid as controlled closed-book exams, and therefore the outcomes are regarded as questionable. Is this true? If it is, why then do we not question the validity of coursework as an assessment method? This session will highlight some of the ways in which question design can be used to ensure that open book exams are valid forms of assessment, giving us greater flexibility in how we assess students.
